I ran across a great review of the new Vespa GTS 300 Super in the LA Times. Here is one of my favorite parts of the article:
“As with “fast,” “torque” isn’t a word that’s typically uttered in conjunction with automatic, continuously variable transmissions, but the Super’s bored-out motor ramps up the power on takeoff, so it’s got some grunt. So much grunt, in fact, that I decided to perform a little stunt. No wheelies were involved. I just decided, while riding PCH last Sunday, to sidle up to the Ninja ZX-6R and Harley-Davidson Dyna that were idling at the red and see if the Super lived up to its name. Suffice to say, it did. I smoked both bikes off the line, then stayed in front of them till the next light.”
The article then goes on to say:
“While I’ve ridden many freeway miles on Vespa’s 150-cc and 250-cc scoots without incident and felt fairly comfortable doing it, I would argue that the GTS 300 is Vespa’s first freeway-capable machine. Vespa estimates the Super’s top speed is 80 mph. I took it up to 90 — the going rate of free-flowing traffic these days — to see if it could keep pace and it did. Without wheezing. Its 12-inch wheels were spinning faster than a rogue lathe, but the 120- and 130-mm treads on the front and rear tires felt planted.”
I myself have ridden the new Vespa GTS 300 Super and it is incredible. Why wouldn’t it be, it’s the fastest Vespa ever made. Michael just sent me a few more photos from the WKRP scooter rally in Cincinnati. Looks like a whole lot of fun, and a beautiful day for riding. Check em out.
Michael left early this morning for the WKRP scooter rally in Cincinnati with several other buddies from Lexington. I spoke to Michael a bit earlier and he said the parking lot was filling up fast. He sent me a couple of photos from his iphone of the rally getting under way, so here ya go. Looks like a lot of fun!
The weather is absolutely perfect here in Lexington and it seems to be just as perfect in Cincinnati. It’s a great day to jump on your scooter and ride.
You gotta check out Life Magazine’s new website. It is an incredible resource for viewing cool photographs. Of course it contains some of the most historic photographs of our time, but I spent my time looking at images of Vespa scooters. You can search photos using specific keywords, and when I entered the word Vespa 242 images were available. I stumbled upon some really great photographs. If you have some time you should definitely check out all the Vespa images at Life Magazine’s new website.
