Spring is right around the corner, and this past weekend we had a little taste of what to expect. Seems like quite a few folks were out and about on their scooters this past Saturday and Sunday. I think we had four or five folks scoot over to the shop on Saturday! I think everyone has got some serious Scoot fever.

As a little pre-game, Vespa Lexington would like to invite everyone out this Friday night for a little grub, some bowling, and some scooter talk. It should be a lot of fun and great way to reconnect with some scooter buds! If you can make it we would love to have you, and if the weather permits ride your scoot down. I am sure there are a few folks that would love to take a chilly evening ride after the bowling. Check the details below:

Meet Up @ Marikka’s Restaurant & Bar around 6:30. If you have never been to Marikka’s it is a real treat! They have Lexington’s largest beer selection offering over 400 different kinds of brew, and great German grub ( their Pretzels and ChedderWursts are the bomb!).

Following dinner at Marikkas we plan to head next door to Southland Bowling Alley for a little competitive bowling (probably around 7:30-8:00).

Vespa Lexington dabbles in a number of different social media outlets. If you follow our blog then you know we like to play around quite a bit with the Twitter and the Facebook. Recently we started playing around (becoming addicted) to a fairly new social media outlet called Foursquare. The reason I think Foursquare is perfect for scooterist, is because unlike Twitter and Facebook it is mobile social media that uses the GPS in your phone (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, or Palm) to help you find “new ways to explore the city“. The best part about Foursquare is that it makes a game out of exploration allowing you to check in to places, share your experiences with friends, earn points and unlock badges, and if there are spots you regularly visit then you can actually become the Mayor of that place. It’s highly addictive and a ton of fun when you make it a contest.

I think Foursquare is going to blow up. It’s such a easy and fun way for all you scooterist to connect, explore, and have fun while out and about. This past weekend Michael and Josh “Crowbar” Fightmaster attended the 2010 International Powersports Dealer Expo in Indianapolis. For those that are not familiar with the Dealer Expo, it’s one of the largest Powersports trade-shows in the world. Last night while watching the Olympics, I was playing around on the computer and decided to search “Vespa Olympics” and ran across this awesome photo from the 1960 Olympics held in Rome of the “Vespa-Riders”. Check out all those Vespa’s with the Olympic badges, so cool! I also included a video of the opening ceremony of the 1960 Olympics in Rome, as you can see below the Opening Ceremonies have changed quite a bit over the years. If you have any additional info on these “Vespa-Riders” of the 1960 Rome Olympics, we would love to hear more about em.

Just ran across this set of these really cool vintage Lego motorcycles and scooters from the 1960’s on Ebay. If your a collector of vintage scooter and motorcycle memorabilia this would make a great addition. Michael purchased some “Modern Lego” Vespa’s around Christmas from Brickforge that are pretty cool, though I like these vintage Vespa Legos much better. We just got our first shipment of new 2010 Vespa and Piaggio scooters last week. One major change for the 2010 model year is that Vespa will not offer a GTS 250. The new 2010 GTS is actually a GTS 300ie, same engine found in the GTS 300 Super. The Vespa GTV will still be a 250cc. I am trying my best not to sound confusing, so long story short for 2010 Vespa will be offering (in their largest engine class) a GTS 300, a GTS 300 Super, and a GTV 250.

I spent a lot of time cruising around on a Vespa GTS 250 last summer, and I can attest that hands down you won’t find another scooter that offers a better ride. With the new 300’s you get the same incredible ride with a quicker acceleration. If you have not read the LA Times review of the 300 Super we posted earlier in the summer, you should check it out.

“While I’ve ridden many freeway miles on Vespa’s 150-cc and 250-cc scoots without incident and felt fairly comfortable doing it, I would argue that the GTS 300 is Vespa’s first freeway-capable machine. Vespa estimates the Super’s top speed is 80 mph. I took it up to 90 — the going rate of free-flowing traffic these days — to see if it could keep pace and it did. Without wheezing. Its 12-inch wheels were spinning faster than a rogue lathe, but the 120- and 130-mm treads on the front and rear tires felt planted.” LA Times
