Crazy Mary’s Whiskey Run (Lexington’s first scooter rally) has come and gone. A great time was had by many, I think between 60-70 people to be exact. Big congratulations are in order for the Circle 4 Scooter Club for organizing and hosting this crazy awesome experience together. A big thanks is on order for the sponsors: The Morris Book Shop, Vespa Lexington (thats us, haha), Corazzo, and Scooter Works. Also just wanted to thank everyone that came out and joined in on the fun. Lets take what we learned and shoot for 200 next year!
One of our good good homies Carl Wagoner has written up a little re-cap of the Crazy Mary’s Whiskey Run which we are going to share with you below. Also there are a ton of great photos floating around. You can view some on our Flickr page and on our Facebook page, check em out and big thanks to Chris Padgett and Michael Wright for capturing all of the fun.

“Kentucky isn’t known for a lot, but it is known to be haven to fast women, beautiful horses, and the best bourbon in the world. Circle 4 SC’s first offering of Crazy Mary’s Whiskey Run featured all three, and much more. The “fast women” we refer to, of course, has only to do with the women riding scooter fast, and there were lots of those. Bourbon and horses had to be close at hand.

The rally, the first scooter rally ever held in Lexington Kentucky, succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of its hosts. Many circumstances colluded to make this event memorable. It really came together nicely. Although at first thought to complicate things (namely lodging), Lexington’s hosting of the World Equestrian Games served in small part to add a little more flavor. Circle 4 decided to take advantage. Friday night kicked off with a group ride to the city’s center, where local girl made good, Broadway/Country Music Star, Laura Bell Bundy was performing on a massive outdoor stage. Best of all it was free. There was plenty of good music, good food, lots of mingling, and more than a little bourbon available on nearly every street corner of this elegant city. After a bit of celebration and seeing what the city had to offer folks drifted off to their accommodations. Looking forward to what would follow.

Saturday began at the friendly confines of one the host sponsors, Vespa Lexington. Registration rolled like clock work. There were lots of locals, a strong hearty contingent from Louisville, Richmond, Manchester, Cincinnati, Dayton and Central Ohio. Ride instructions were given, folks gassed up, and soon enough 70 plus scoots rolled out of South Lexington for a most memorable day.

The ride itself unfolded like a beautifully sculpted work of art. Commercial areas quickly faded into well manicured suburbs, which just as quickly gave way to the rolling hills, gentle twisties, and working farms of the region, winding its way to Nonesuch, KY. (Yes there really is such a place). After departing this sprawling metropolis of 63, the route snaked its way basically north. By way of tiny twisty unlined roads, the long line of scooters rolled past harvested tobacco fields, mighty rivers, flowing streams, majestic palisades and countless beautiful views, arriving finally at the gracious grounds of Buffalo Trace Distillery. Buffalo Trace is the oldest continuously operating Bourbon distillery in the world. The folks there fed the group, and then conducted a brief, interesting and entertaining tour of the facility ending in a sampling of their wares. After leaving Buffalo Trace, there was a quick jaunt to the Capitol Building in nearby Frankfort, for a group photo. Then the happy pack began its run down the home stretch. Between Frankfort and Lexington are miles and miles of white plank fences full of beautiful thoroughbreds that would run along side our happy band. It was thrilling. Words here cant describe what beauty that is. We rolled through the grounds of world famous Keeneland Race Course finally to arrive back in Lexington.

The weather which turned suddenly cold and damp threatened to put a damper on the rally’s end, but the boys (Mike and Whit) of Vespa Lexington, pulled our fat out of the fire. After a quick venue shift a wonderful meal of Pulled Pork and Beer was consumed, an abbreviated Gymnkhana was held in the drizzle, awards were given, raffles won, lots of laughs were had, many new friendships were formed, and older ones strengthened. We said our ‘good-byes’ all looking forward to future rallies

There’s a song that has the lyric “sometimes you’re the Louisville slugger, sometimes you’re the ball. Sometimes it all comes together, sometimes it don’t come together at all.” True enough. This day it all came together. Put this one on your calendar for next year.” -Carl Wagoner
